Portfolio News
As a portfolio update note, I sold my small position in Texas Instruments. It wasn’t a fundamental decision; it was due to a conflict of interest with my employer. Increasingly, I find myself having to evaluate and purchase products for which Texas Instrument competes, and we need to be as objective as possible. I didn’t “have” to sell, but felt it most appropriate to do so. It’s rather unfortunate selling at an inopportune time after such a short holding period, and I lost a bit of money on this “trade”, but fortunately it was my smallest individual stock position, so no worries. I like the company, am familiar with it (too familiar?), and liked the bit of tech exposure that it gave my portfolio.
Markets News
In more general news, stocks had an atypically abrupt correction over the last few weeks. The Dow has fallen for 9 consecutive days, and had the largest drop since 2008 on Thursday. The S&P 500 is in a similar boat. Many international indexes took an even bigger hit. Economic worries and worldwide debt worries are lagging on the indexes. For value investors, and particularly those with portfolios that are wisely diverse among asset classes, market volatility like this is a blessing rather than a curse. Be on the lookout for bargains, either in terms of markets or individual stocks.
